Implant Supported Dentures Procedure

implant supported dentures Tucson, AZ

If you are opting for implant supported dentures, knowing the steps involved will help prepare your mind for the procedure. This type of denture connects to the implants embedded in the jawbone instead of lying on your gums like a traditional denture and are therefore more stable, long-lasting and less problematic. The procedure typically takes about two surgeries and around six months to complete the process.

The initial consultation

The first step of the procedure is to meet a general dentist experienced in implant placement for an appointment. The dentist will take impressions and x-rays so they can create teeth models. Some dentists may also request for a CT scan to know the location of the sinus cavities and nerves, and the amount of bone available. If the patient does not already have a denture, a temporary one may be created for them.

Implant placement surgery

The dental implants are small screws created from titanium and inserted surgically into the jawbone. The dental implant replaces the tooth root and performs its functions. After making a small incision on the gum, the dentist will create a hole inside the jawbone and place the implant post. The process is repeated, depending on the number of implants to be placed, and the dentist will close up incisions.

One of the benefits of choosing implant supported dentures is that fewer implants can be placed to support the entire denture. For complete upper dentures, the dentist may place between six to eight implants, while lower dentures may only need four to five implants. after completing the implant placement, there is a waiting period of about three to five months, during which the bone will grow around the implant, a process known as osseointegration.

After osseointegration, another procedure will be done to reveal the head of the implant so that a healing cap or collar can be placed to guide healing. Patients will wear the collar for about two weeks before the dentist replaces them with regular abutments, snap or bar. The technique may be different, depending on the dentist.

Creating the dentures

The next stage of the procedure is to create the final dentures. After the gums have healed and are healthy, the dentist will take impressions of the patient’s teeth with digital technology or dental mold. Before the final dentures are ready, the dentist may create a wax model to ascertain the fit and outlook of the dentures. They will be able to tell if additional adjustments are necessary.

When the dentist and the patient are pleased with the fit and appearance of the dentures, the dental lab technician will produce the prosthesis from durable and natural-looking materials. After the dentures are ready, the patient will return for another appointment. The dentist will connect the dentures and make any final adjustments to the dentures. The tooth restoration stage is the most exciting part of the process, as the patient can finally enjoy full dental functions.

Final note

In the end, the dentist will teach the patient how to care for their new implant supported dentures properly. Regular appointments with the general dentist are also important for a dental checkup.
